John Chappell

John "JackGÇ¥ Harvey Chappell, our loving husband, dad and grandpa passed away May 22, 2013. Jack was born in Tacoma, Wash. and lived most of his life in Ashford, National, Elbe and later in Eatonville. Attended Eatonville High School and enlisted in the Army 1944. Serving during WWII in various war theaters overseas. Worked on the construction of the Alder Dam. The rest of his career, he worked as a logger. Retiring from Weyerhaeuser after 30 plus years. He established the Pierce County Fire District 23 and served there as a fire commissioner, fire chief and EMT. Active in the Mt. Rainier Lions club and later transferred to Mineral Lake Lions. He served as a board member of the Eatonville School District for many yearss He played baseball in the Army and on the National Loggers Softball team sponsored by Weyerhaeuser, and was the player-coach for many years. Lions Club also sponsored a softball team which Jack coached. He was joined on the team by sons Jackie and Chuck. A highlight of the tournament was when they all three hit back-to-back-to-back home runs. Jack received the MVP of the tournament held at the Eatonville High School field. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Lucy Chappell, great-granddaughter Chelsea Oakes, grandson Douglas Chappell, step-daughter Carol, brother Everett Chappell, sister Gladys Sawyer, sister Shirley Clevenger. He is survived by his loving wife Delores; daughter Carolyn (Jim); son Chuck (Di); son Jackie; daughter Bev; step-daughters Peggy (Glenn), Barbara (Michael), Bev (Greg) and Janet. He is also survived by his sister Myra and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. A memorial will be held in his honor at the Eatonville Baptist Church on Friday, May 31 at 1 p.m.
