Pierce County Superior Court judges were decided and the potential outcomes of races for Congress and Pierce County Executive were previewed in last week's primary election.
U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert, whose Eighth District constituency in west and east of the Cascades includes the Eatonville area, easily advanced to the general election in November. The Republican will face Democrat Karen Porterfield.
Winning seats in five Superior Court races were Vicki Hogan, Jerry Costello, Stephanie Arend, Kathryn Nelson and Stan Rumbaugh. Hogan, Arend and Nelson are incumbents. All three received at least 60 percent of the votes in their races.
Costello, a deputy prosecuting attorney for the county, and Rumbaugh are elected judges for the first time.
In an indication of her chances for re-election, County Executive Pat McCarthy received about 64 percent of the votes for nearly a 30 point edge against Bruce Minker, a union leader for the county's jail guards. They're the only candidates and will automatically move on to the general election.
In another race of particular local interest, state Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn, who lives in Eatonville, advanced to the general election in November by garnering more than 50 percent in the statewide contest. Don Hansler, a Spanaway-area resident, finished fourth with 9.8 percent.
