If you missed the chance to get into Mount Rainier National Park free last weekend, don't worry. There will be more opportunities for free admission later this year. The three-day Presidents Day holiday weekend Feb. 15-17 was one of the scheduled waivers by the National Park Service of normal admission fees. More are scheduled for April 19-20 (National Park Week), Aug. 25 (National Park Service's anniversary), Sept. 27 (Public Lands Day) and Nov. 11 (Veterans Day). Among the activities available to park visitors last weekend, and scheduled to continue the rest of the winter and beyond as long as conditions are right, are ranger-guided snowshoe walks. The walks cover approximately 1.5 miles in two hours and are limited to 25 people, 8 years old or older, on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is at the Henry M. Jackson Visitor Center at Paradise beginning one hour before the start times 11:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. Participants who don't have snow shoes can rent a pair for a $5 donation from the park. More information is available at (360) 569-6575.
