Three water districts have no candidates for open seats in this fall's election despite two attempts to get some. During the regular candidate filing period in May, nobody entered the races for water commissioner in the Kapowsin, Elbe and Ashford water districts. And the races were still empty after a special three-day filing period that the Pierce County elections department conducted July 22-24. As a result, the current commissioners will likely stay in office GÇô or at least can, if they wish GÇô in order to keep the positions filled and enable the districts to carry out their business. Auditor Julie Anderson, who oversees elections for the county, said it's common for incumbents in such situations to stay in office temporarily until another call for candidates for the following year's election. Incumbents can also leave office when their terms expire. Kapowsin Water District has two seats that needed candidates this year, Elbe Water District has two, and Ashford Water District has one. Each district has three commissioners and needs at least two in order to conduct business. The commissioners are part-time positions. Voting in the general election will begin in mid-October and end Nov. 3.
