State Fair starts expanded 21-day run

The state's biggest party is bigger this year. The Washington State Fair starts its extended 21-day run Sept. 2. More dates will give people more options for attending, and weekend congestion around the fairgrounds in Puyallup is expected to decrease with the addition of the Labor Day weekend as fair dates, officials said. Another change this year: The fair will be closed on Tuesdays to give staff and vendors time to rest, restock and recharge. The traditional, fair-opening Western Rodeo Parade and Cattle Drive will occur Sept. 9. Guests can give back to the community via a KOMO-TV food drive on Sept. 2 and a school supply drive for Communities in Schools on Sept. 9. Admission will be free from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. those days for guests who bring the suggested donations. Concerts by musicial and comedy stars will he held all 21 nights. A lineup is available at thefair.com/concerts. Traditional favorites for most fairgoers are back, including scones, elephant ears, Piglet Palace, the Classic Coaster, strolling entertainment, and commercial vendors.
