Weekend wind knocks out power, closes Northwest Trek

Pierce County was among the areas where Puget Sound Energy customers were without electricity last weekend as a result of wind storms. A spokesman for the utility (PSE) said crews expected to repair storm damage and have power restored by 9 p.m. Monday in Pierce County, including areas east of Graham and near State Route 161 between Kapowsin and Eatonville. Other areas that were affected in the Puget Sound region also were expected to have their electricity back Monday, but parts of some counties were going to be without electricity until Tuesday. Approximately 70,000 PSE customers were without power as of Saturday afternoon. The outage affected more than 1,800 locations in Pierce and King, Thurston, Kitsap, Whatcom and Skagit counties. Trees toppled by wind onto utility poles and wires caused the outages, according to PSE. High wind and the potential impact on trees caused Northwest Trek to close early Saturday out of concern for the safety of visitors, officials at the heavily forested wildlife park near Eatonville reported. Northwest Trek's deputy director, Alan Varsik, said the facility was open for a few hours in the morning but was shut down at about 12 p.m. for the rest of the day when strong winds caused considerable movement among trees.
