Mountain skier dies after fall into crevasse

A skier high on the slopes of Mount Rainier died in a fall into a crevasse Sunday.

According to Mount Rainier National Park officials, the accident occurred on Emmons Glacier at an elevation of about 12,800 feet. Rescuers descended approximately 150 feet into the crevasse to recover the body, which was flown by helicopter to a lower elevation and released to the Pierce County medical examiner.

Park officials said the victim suffered "traumatic injuries." Other information wasn’t immediately available about the victim, who was skiing down the mountain with two other people.

The mishap occurred about two weeks after another skier on the mountain fell through a snow bridge into a rushing creek and disappeared. He hasn’t been found and is presumed to be dead.
