G-K's Simonson fourth in 4A pole vault

Chad Simonson of Graham-Kapowsin went into the 4A state high school track and field championships as one of the top pole vaulters, and he came out the same way.
Simonson, a junior who was the fourth-ranked competitor statewide before the state meet May 25-27 in Tacoma, finished fourth in the event by clearing 14 feet. Clay Somes of Joel Ferris won at 15-6.
Simonson’s finish was the highest for a non-senior.
Another Bethel School District entrant, Spanaway Lake’s Rock Gray, finished third in the javelin in the 3A portion of the state meet, held at the same Mount Tahoma High School location as the 4A competition. Gray uncorked a personal-best throw of 179 feet 11 inches, about four feet shorter than the title-winning and state-record throw of 183-10 by Ferndale’s Ben Broselle (183-10).
Gray also was seventh in the shot put (52 feet 5 inches).
