Equestrians start season with a bang

A record-setting ride and high finishes in drills highlighted Eatonville High School's season-opening equestrian meet.
During the three-day competition Feb. 3-5 at the Washington Horsemen Tacoma Unit in Spanaway, Eatonville's three drill teams finished first or second, and sophomore Kennedy Seroshek set a new district and school record in the barrel run aboard Stealer, her new horse she's been riding for only five months.
Kennedy and Stealer had three first-place finishes during the meet, one of which was with her bi-wrangle partner, Mackenzie Huggler.
Other Eatonville riders who finished in the top 10 in at least one event included Eilidh Bentz, Josie Carlton, Savannah Carpenter, Camryn Cearley, Julia Clayton, Taelor Clayton, Alicia Cornejo, Cecilia Fields, Kailey Flansburg, Kailee Gahms, Bailey Hatler, Kate-lynn Helton, Emily Johnson, Sami Kuhlman, Sydney Kuhlman, Ellianna Leonard, Cassidy Long, Kelly Luther, Bella Monta, Samantha Monta, Kaylie Murphy, Catie Poppen-Eagan, Rachel Reed, Abby Rodewald, Kenzie Rodewald, Tawni Saylor, Zachary Shackelford, Rachel Semancik, Melony Shetler, Allie Smathers, Jenna Steiner, Tabitha Wainscott, Caius Windsor, Colton Worrell and Ann-Christin Zillger.
Zillger, a foreign exchange student from Germany, won in hunt seat over fences. Another foreign exchange student, Matleena Lappalainen from Finland, along with teammates Saylor, Bentz, and Helton, took first place in 4-man drill.
Eatonville's next meet will be held March 17-19 inĀ  Elma at the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds. After that, the team will travel to Lynden for the final District 2 meet April 20-23.
The top 10 riders from each event from all districts will move on to the state finals, which are scheduled for May 12-14 in Moses Lake.
