Day of Service and Remembrance Sept. 9 in Eatonville

The annual 9-11 Day of Service and Remembrance in Eatonville will be held on Sept. 9, giving volunteers opportunities to participate in community service projects.
Registration will start at 8:30 a.m. in front of Eatonville High School, followed by opening ceremonies at 9. Shortly after, teams will break away to begin their volunteer activities.

Eatonville is among locations nationally where the Day of Service and Remembrance honors the victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks and the men and women who serve the United States as first-responders and in the military.

Another nature walk at Morse Wildlife Preserve

The next in Morse Wildlife Preserve's series of Second Sunday nature walks is scheduled for Sept. 10.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the preserve in Graham will be open to the public via foot trails and a boardwalk. Sights will include forest, prairies and wetlands and the creatures that live in there.
The preserve, which is managed by Forterra, a non-profit conservation organization, is located at 25415 70th Ave E. Additional information is available from Tahoma Audubon at 253-565-9278 and tahomaaudubon.org and at morsewildlifepreserve.org.
Second Sunday events are held monthly from April through October.

Celebration in memory of Harry Everett

A celebration of life for Harry Everett Jr. is scheduled for Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Eatonville Eagles hall at 100 Weyerhaeuser Road N. in Eatonville.
A service will be followed by a potluck meal. Organizers of the gathering are inviting people to wear their Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Mariners or Michigan State University attire.
Donations in Everett's memory can be made to Northwest Trek, 11610 Trek Dr. E., Eatonville, WA 98328.
Everett, a longtime Eatonville-area resident, died Aug. 3. He was 76.

State Fair struts its stuff

The Washington State Fair, the largest single attraction held annually in the state, is in the midst of another 20-day run in Puyallup.
Ranked perennially among the largest fairs in the world, the event continues through Sept. 24 – except on Tuesdays when it will be closed. Food, animal and farm produce exhibits, carnival rides and games, commercial displays and free entertainment are planned, along with a professional rodeo and big-name concert performers. The latter include Nickelback, Daughtry, Steven Tyler, Melissa Etheridge and The Beach Boys.

Free class on Medicare

People who are turning 65 soon and want to know about receiving Medicare can attend a free class Saturday in Eatonville.
The classes, sponsored by Sound Outreach and the Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA), will cover Medicare Parts A and B Medicare supplement and Medicare Advantage plans, Part D prescription drug plans. Medicare and individuals' employer insurance. and when to sign up for Medicare.
The class will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 9 at the Eatonville branch of the Pierce County Library System, located at 205 Center St. W.

People planning to attend can RSVP with Sound Outreach at 253-596-0918, but walk-ins are also welcome.
Then classes are sponsored by SHIBA, a free program affiliated with the state insurance commissioner.
