The town of Index is gearing up for a weekend of art, music, dancing and of course, outdoor adventures.
The Index Arts Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 2 at Doolittle Park in Index. Festival highlights will include local musicians and art in several different mediums including painting, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, leatherwork, poetry readings, children's art activities and much more.
The three-day Skyfest event, which is hosted by the outdoor river-rafting and kayaking adventure company the Outdoor Adventure Center, will coincide with the arts festival.
"This year Skyfest is going to be on the same day,GÇ¥ said Index Arts Festival Chairperson Judy Davis. "We're going to try and combine them this year and see how that goes.GÇ¥
The arts festival will take place in the park in the middle of town, with the spoken word exhibit taking place in the Index Elementary School gym and chalk-drawing and other children's activities happening behind the school. There will also be food including edible art, fruit smoothies and Mediterranean cuisine from the Monroe restaurant Bella Balducci's.
Admission and parking for the event are free of charge.
The Index Arts Festival is a way to acknowledge and celebrate the arts whether visual art, poetry, writing, music or performance art. The Arts Festival Board of Directors is committed to preserving and promoting exposure to all forms of art, and they particularly hope to encourage the youth in the community to become more involved in the arts.
"We're a nonprofit, so we try to raise the money to support young artists,GÇ¥ said Davis.
The Index Arts Festival has sent students to the Tim Noah Thumbnail Theatre in Snohomish for instruction on performing arts as well as the Schack Art Center in Everett.
Live music will be performed from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. with the lineup including many local musicians. Dancing will continue in the park even after the artists have packed up their wares.
"The whole town looks forward to this event,GÇ¥ said Davis.
Attendees are welcome to bring their dogs, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. The drinking of alcoholic beverages is not permitted in Doolittle Park, but guests who wish to partake can cross the street and have a beer at the River House, which is owned and operated by the Outdoor Adventure Center.
Index is located approximately 23 miles east of Monroe along U.S. 2. Free parking will be available in the large grass lot just off the Index-Galena Road immediately before the 5th Street bridge which crosses over the Skokomish River and heads into town. Guests are welcome to park in the lot and cross the bridge on foot.
Sound and the musical lineup is being coordinated by Patrick Sample and Paradise Sound Recording with additional assistance from Jack Langley, Jim Brown and Gil Rene.
