Bearcat Beat | Upcoming events provide opportunities to get involved

As the year comes close to an end, Monroe High School (MHS) students still seek to find ways to better the school and community and prepare for next year, while still enjoying the remainder of the 2014-15 school year.
Last week, Key Club, National Honor Society and the Associated Student Body (ASB) all partnered to clean the school grounds in honor of Earth Day, April 22. That same evening, the ASB class decided to go around the city and collect food items which were donated to the Sky Valley Food Bank (233 Sky River Pkwy.). The students collected over 500 pounds of food in total. Thank you to the students who are bettering the place we live.
Speaking of bettering our school, there are a few opportunities coming up for students to get involved in the school next year. Cheer packets are being distributed by Mrs. Berry in the counseling center. So, if you are interested in trying out out for cheer in May, make sure you pick one up. The cheerleaders have opportunities to volunteer in the community and create a more positive environment in the school by acting as a catalyst to the positive energy.
There are also Link Crew applications being offered to sophomores and juniors in the main office. They are due May 8 by 3 p.m. to Room No. 701. Link Crew members are in charge of creating a safe, accepting environment for new students.
While it is important to prepare for next year, it is also vital to enjoy the moment and finish the year strong. To ensure this throughout the student body, there are some upcoming events to keep the environment lively. On May 1, there will be auditions for MHS Idol, held in the choir room after school. The event will be May 21 at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. MHS Idol gives students an opportunity to show off their talents to their fellow peers. With that being said, the panel of judges will elect the top three performers. From those three, the audience will have the opportunity to donate money to their favorite performer. The person with the most money donated will win six free, family-sized pizzas from the Monroe Papa Murphy's.
Eye, Ear, Art is another event that allows students to share their talents. Art students will have their work displayed for all to see May 14 in the Commons from 3 to 7 p.m. There will be a silent auction and all proceeds benefit the Monroe Arts Council for renovations to the Wagner Auditorium. Anyone is welcome to donate pieces for auction; they just have to be approved by Mrs. Wilmore in advance. So save the dates and come support your MHS students in their efforts to preserve the lively atmosphere!
