Bearcats suffer crippling loss to Lake Stevens


Monroe, already hobbled with the loss of both their first and second team quarterbacks for the rest of the season, took on the Vikings at Lake Stevens on Friday, Oct. 10.
Zach Zimmerman was called on to fill the shoes of his older brother, Andrew, at the quarterback position. Monroe elected to receive the kickoff to start the game. Three downs later they were forced to punt.-áThe punt, muffed by Lake Stevens, was recovered by the Bearcats on the Vikings 26 yard line. Two plays later the Bearcats scored when J.J. Jerome took a screen pass from Zach Zimmerman 31 yards, putting the Bearcats ahead, 7 -0.
Monroe was unable to put additional points on the scoreboard until late in the fourth quarter.-áAfter the initial score by the Bearcats it was all Lake Stevens. Viking quarterback Jacob Eason was on fire, leading the offense to 63 straight points before retiring to the sidelines after the first offensive series of the third quarter. Eason completed 18 of 30 passes for 301 yards and six touchdowns.
Monroe scored the first and last touchdowns of the game as Zimmerman connected with freshman Isiah Lewis on a 75-yard pass in the closing minutes of the game. Head coach Brett Jay had high praise for Zach Zimmerman after the game. "He comes out and plays a top ten team like Lake Stevens and did not blink an eye. I appreciate his character and we are going to keep taking steps forward with him.GÇ¥ Monroe dropped to 4 GÇô 2 on the season after winning the first four games and will be home for the next two weeks against Cascade and Mariner.
