Future chefs cook up culinary creations in contest


Four winners were selected at Sultan School District's first annual Future Chefs' Competition on April 26.
The competition, held at Sultan High School, was made up of fourth and fifth graders from Sultan and Gold Bar Elementary Schools who submitted recipes. Six finalists were chosen from each school.
Each finalist prepared his or her dish, which were sampled by a panel of judges. Parents and staff were also welcome to try the scrumptious culinary selections. The four winners were announced in the following categories: healthiest snack, kid-friendliest snack, kid-fun snack and judges' choice.
Each winner received a chef's coat and hat, a cookbook, a medal and goodie bag. Winners will also be recognized by the Sultan Board of Directors at the May 20 board meeting.
Listed below are the winners by category, with the names of their dishes:
Healthiest snack: Carmen Valencia-Correa, Gold Bar Elementary, carrot ceviche.
Kid-friendliest snack: Ginger VanValkenburg, Sultan Elementary, golden honey banana sandwich.
Kid-fun snack: Joesiah Day, Sultan Elementary, peanut butter energy bites.
Judges' choice: Kassandra Burto
