Hazel Phylis Cassidy, born September 14, 1917 in Mellen, WI, was the seventh of eleven children born to Harry and Sarah Ruth Bushaw. She passed away peacefully in her daughter's home in Monroe, WA Sunday, August 17, 2014.
After her marriage to Raymond E. Cassidy in November, 1934 she became a devoted homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother; loving her part in each role. Raymond's occupation led them to live in seven different states including Eva Beach, Hawaii before settling in Washington in 1947. After relocating several times in Washington upon Ray's retirement, the couple moved their last time to Monroe in 1973.
Hazel loved working in her yard and garden on Lewis Street. Furthering her gardening talents, Hazel became a member of the Monroe Garden Club, spending many devoted years beautifying the town and participating in countless events. After holding several different offices within the club, she was eventually honored to become a lifetime member.
After the death of her beloved husband, Hazel became a resident of Merrill Gardens Retirement home in 2001. Here, she enjoyed fellowship with friends, travel on field trips, bingo and the many forms of entertainment brought about by the activity director. She was extremely pleased to be appointed a Resident Ambassador; welcoming new residents and helping to make everyone feel accepted and befriended. Hazel moved out of Merrill Gardens to reside with her daughter and family at the age of 95 after breaking her hip, requiring a total replacement.
Hazel is survived by her daughter, Patricia (John) Roth of Monroe; daughter-in-law, Barbara Cassidy of Roseburg, OR; sister-in-law, Beatrice Bushaw of Mellen, WI; six grandchildren; numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a myriad of friends and loved ones.
She was preceeded in death by her husband, Raymond; son, James; grandson, Brendan Cassidy; her parents and ten siblings.
A memorial service honoring Hazel's life will be held on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Morning Star Lutheran Church, 342 S. Lewis St., Monroe. Memorials in her name may be made to Children's Hospital in Seattle, WA.
