J. Metz Evered passed away on July 23 at the age of 96.
"Metz", the son of Barbara (Metzger) Evered and John Francis Evered, was born on November 26, 1917 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He spent his formative years in Livingston, Montana, and moved to Wenatchee, Washington as a teenager. He graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1933. When World War II broke out he was working for a logging company in the Oregon forests. While it was an industry that exempted him from military service, he believed it was his duty to serve his country. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and was sent overseas to Japan. For two years he served as an electronics technician repairing all shipboard electronics, then re-entered civilian life in 1946. He attended the University of Washington and graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1952. After graduating from college he worked first as a bookkeeper, then entered the profession he continued until retirement as a salesman of building supplies. In his early years he enjoyed competitive sailing of Star class sailboats with a club at Leschi. On May 15, 1954 he married Charlotte Woosley. They resided in Bellevue, Washington where they raised their three children. The couple was married for 55 years until Charlotte's death in 2009. Metz and Charlotte are best known as the owners of Sultan Hardware & Building Supply, which they purchased in 1971. They moved to Startup, Washington in 1978, fulfilling Metz's dream of living on a river. They operated the business until their retirement in 2007.
Metz was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Evered, and his brother Paul Francis Evered. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Evered and son-in-law Gary Bezowsky; his son, J. Metz Evered, Jr. (Jay) and daughter-in-law Kellie (Langkow) Evered; and daughter, Joy Evered. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Katherine, Alice and Sarah Evered.
