A five-vehicle crash that resulted in two transports to Valley General Hospital was due to a medical emergency, police believe.
A white 2014 Dodge Ram pickup driven by a 31-year-old Monroe man was waiting in the left turn lane of eastbound U.S. 2 at Kelsey Street when he may have had a medical emergency. The exact nature of the emergency has not been confirmed as of Thursday.
His vehicle entered the intersection, then collided with four waiting westbound vehicles before traveling across three lanes of traffic and all the way to the Shell gas station at the corner of U.S. 2 and Lewis Street, dropping over a low embankment and coming to rest. The airbag did deploy, and the driver was taken to Valley General Hospital, where he was treated and released.
On the way, it struck four other vehicles, all local.
One was a 2007 Nissan truck, driven by a Gold Bar man, 57. His airbag deployed. He sustained an injury, and was taken by ambulance to Valley General Hospital. The truck was damaged on the passenger side and was towed away.
Another was a 2006 Honda Civic driven by a Monroe man, 72. It, too, was damaged on the passenger side and was towed away.
A Gold Bar man, 52, was not injured when his 1998 Ford Explorer was struck on the passenger side, but that vehicle had to be towed away, as well.
And a woman, 67, of Monroe also had her 2005 Ford Escape towed away after it was struck on the passenger side. She was not injured.
