Monroe Monitor celebrates WNPA awards


Monroe Monitor staff picked up several awards during the recent 2014 Better Newspaper Contest, which is organized by the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association (WNPA). The ceremony was held on Friday, Oct. 3 in Chelan. Awards were as follows:
First Place, Best Crime and Courts Story: Polly Keary for, "Out of the hole: Mental health program in Monroe prison could mean less "supermax' prisoners,GÇ¥October 15, 2013.
Second Place, Best Comprehensive Coverage: Chris Hendrickson, for her comprehensive coverage of the Jayme Biendl murder trial, during which convicted killer Byron Scherf was given the death penalty.
Third Place, Best General Feature Story GÇô Long: Polly Keary for, "No time to put his boots on: Monroe Pearl Harbor Veteran, 91, looks back,GÇ¥ December 3, 2013.
First Place, Best Lifestyle Feature Story: Polly Keary for, "Greenhorns: California couple learns farm life,GÇ¥ October 21, 2013.
Third Place, Best Sports Personality Profile: Polly Keary for, "From the Bearcats to the Super Bowl,GÇ¥ published on February 18, 2014.
Third Place, Best Sports Action Photo: Jim Scolman for "Wakeboard contest finds good weather,GÇ¥ July 2, 2013.
First Place, Best Special Section GÇô Topical, Non-Tourism: Monroe Monitor for, "Home in the Sky,GÇ¥ with contributions from RIM Publications Graphic Artist Angela Nickerson, Monroe Monitor Editor Polly Keary, Monroe Monitor Contributing Writer Chris Hendrickson and RIM Publications Managing Editor Stephen Miller.
