Monroe student advances in Lions International Peace Poster Contest

Nathan Suss, a sixth grade student at Park Place Middle School, has taken the first step to becoming an internationally-recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the Monroe Lions Club.
Nathan's poster was among more than 375,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 27th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.
"Peace is a heart pumping colorful light for all with understanding and courage,GÇ¥ the 12 year old from Monroe said.
The poster was selected by Local artist Sally Ohlsen and Monroe Lions Keith Ridell and Edward Faulds for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, "Peace, Love and Understanding.GÇ¥
"Suss's poster will advance to face stiff competition through the district, multiple district and international rounds of competition if he is to be declared the international grand prize winner ,GÇ¥ Monroe Lions Club President Kim Hoover said.
One grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $5,000, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to an award ceremony.
The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate-áand a cash award of $500.
Nathan, along with his parents and art instructor Shaerie Bruton, were honored by the club November 19 at Sockeye's Restaurant.
