Officers from the Monroe Police Department were dispatched to assist the Washington State Patrol after a fatal one-car collision at U.S. 2 and Sofie Road at 11:24 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12.
According to WSP Trooper Mark Francis, the 18-year-old male driver was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed prior to the crash. One passenger was deceased at the scene, while four other juveniles were transported to local hospitals. U.S. 2 was closed for several hours while officers investigated the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.
According to Francis, initial analysis at the scene indicates the driver was traveling more than 100 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
The Sultan School District issued a statement about the incident:
"This morning we received the unfortunate news that some of our students were involved in a very serious car accident last night,GÇ¥ wrote Sultan High School principal Tami Nesting. "At this time, no names or official information have been released. I am writing to let you know that we are aware of the situation and have a plan in place should your student be affected or just need someone to talk with.GÇ¥
Outside counselors were on campus on Friday, Nov. 13, and additional counselors will be available in upcoming days for students, families or staff members.
The driver was booked into Snohomish County Jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, driver under the age of 21 in consumption of alcohol or marijuana and reckless endangerment. He was arrested too late to be arraigned on Friday, Nov. 13, and is expected to appear in court on Monday, Nov. 16.
