An elderly couple was transported to EvergreenHealth Monroe after their car went off the roadway into a ditch and hit a concrete block last Wednesday morning.

The 81-year-old man did not brake before the crash happened, according to Monroe Police Department's administrative director Debbie Willis. The black Jeep began to veer right from the westbound lane near the intersection of Cascade View Drive, and started up onto the paved shoulder.

“According to the passenger, the driver appeared to have suffered from a medical emergency while driving, making him unable to operate the vehicle,” according to Willis.

Monroe Police responded, and announced on social media around 11 a.m. June 20 that other drivers should expect delays. The westbound lane of the highway was blocked and traffic detoured for almost an hour and a half, according to Willis.

Once in the ditch, the car continued traveling westbound, according to Willis. The vehicle flipped upside down, collided with a concrete block, and then rolled back over onto its wheels; it came to a rest propped up on a fence post.
