Taylor Gese, a Monroe High School senior, will head to New York University this fall with a $1,000 scholarship from the Monroe Monitor.
Gese, 17, is pursuing a major in media, culture and communications, with concentrations in politics and global media.
Her high school career was distinguished. She graduated with a 3.9 GPA, and was involved with the ASB and doing community service.
She also spearheaded a successful effort to start an SAT preparation class that proved to be overwhelmingly popular at the high school.
And, grateful for financial support she got from the community that allowed her to attend a seminar at NYU last summer, she created her own scholarship program and was able to give a $1,000 scholarship to a fellow student this year.
Gese is very excited about attending NYU, which is located in Greenwich Village in New York City. As part of her global media studies she will travel to Buenos Aires and Paris.
Ultimately, she said, she might like to work at the United Nations or in political communication.
"I think I have a good perspective on things," she said. "And I took a class on war and conflict and then another in current issues, and that was when I was the most motivated in high school."
She will need all the financial support she can get.
Tuition, room, board and other expenses will total $68,000 per year for her, and although the school is picking up half of that, she will be depending on scholarships, loans and grants for the rest.
This year marked the second year that the Monroe Monitor has offered a scholarship to a high school student or students seeking a major or career in communications.
Last year's recipient, Elana Pidgeon, is returning this summer for an internship with the Monitor.
