Snohomish County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested two suspected package and mail thieves on Wednesday, Dec. 24, in Sultan.
At approximately 7:30 a.m., a Sultan resident noticed a woman allegedly taking mail and a package from a mailbox belonging to a house located at the 600 block of Date Avenue, near Sultan Elementary School. According to police documents, the neighbor also noticed a male suspect on the opposite side of the street, appearing to act as a lookout person. The neighbor called 911 and provided them with a description of both suspects.
Deputies arrived shortly thereafter, located the suspects and detained them. The witness was brought to the scene of contact, at 2nd and Main Street, and was able to positively identify the suspects as being the same individuals seen allegedly stealing the mail.
The couple was in possession of a backpack full of stolen mail, along with at least one stolen package. A 30-year-old male and a 26-year-old female, both Sultan residents, were arrested and booked into Snohomish County Jail.
Both suspects were booked on felony charges of mail theft and possession of stolen mail. The mail suspect declined to give a statement to police.
The female suspect agreed to give a statement to police, and per police documents, admitted to stealing mail from approximately 100 mailboxes in the city of Sultan. She told the officer that she was forced to steal mail by the male suspect, and that she did it because she was afraid of him. She allowed the officer to search her bag, and in it, he discovered mail from at least 24 different addresses.
She told officers that she and the male suspect had stashed mail in an acquaintance's trailer, as well as in other locations around town.
The female suspect is being held in Snohomish County Jail on $5,000 bail. The male is being held on $7,500 bail.
