Charles Harold Rubert

Charles Harold Rubert, 88, of-á Spanaway, Washington, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2014, surrounded by his family at the Franciscan Hospice House in University Place, due to complications of dementia. Charles was born on the family homestead at Krager Lake in Eatonville, WA on July 26, 1926, to parents Margaret and Harold Rubert. He was raised there with his two siblings, Joan and Bud, then married Arlene Sumey on October 25, 1952. They raised their family in Eatonville, then moved to Spanaway in their retirement. Strong in character and person, Charles lived a life full of faith, love, family and service.-áCharles served in the Navy during WWII, then spent the majority of his career with Tacoma City Power. He was one of the last manual operators for the LaGrande Dam before the switch to automation. Charles and Arlene found an immense amount of pleasure in spending time outdoors. From berry-picking, to hiking, to camping, they enjoyed God's creation as often as possible. In fact, they loved Northwest Trek so much they sustained a membership from it's opening year in 1975. They were regulars, sometimes visiting a couple of times a week.-áTurning his love and knowledge of the outdoors into an opportunity to serve, Charles spent 20 years with Pierce County Search and Rescue. As part of that, he became a licensed HAM Radio operator and loved the connections he created with others from all over. Known lovingly as "MacGyver" to his family, Charles could fix just about anything. He loved to tinker. He also passed much time deep in the pages of his favored Louis L'Amour books.-áCharles is loved by many and will be missed greatly, but as Arlene says, "I know where he's going." We will see you again, Charles. He leaves behind the love of his life, Arlene Rubert, seven devoted children; Rebecca (and Doug) Trieste, Mary (and Jeff) Klaiber, Timothy (and Melissa) Rubert, James (and Louise) Rubert, Daniel Rubert, Christine Auker, and Judith Helle, twelve wonderful grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and sister Joan Vormestrand. He is predecesed by his parents and his brother, Bud. The family will be hosting a memorial service at Dryer's Mortuary in Parkland (253-537-0253) on Saturday, September 13. Family and friends are invited to attend.
