Rogers (2-5) at Graham-Kapowsin (7-0), Oct. 22, 7 p.m.
Alone in first place in the 4A South Puget Sound League's South Division, Graham-Kapowsin's Eagles will be trying to stay in the pole position and also move closer to the regular-season title when they host Rogers this Thursday at Art Crate Field. Rogers is coming off a 24-0 blanking last week of Spanaway Lake that snapped a four-game losing streak. Graham-Kapowsin, meanwhile, is riding an undefeated record after beating Puyallup 35-13 last Friday. Ahead at one juncture 21-0 in the first half, in large part because of Kobe Merriweather's two long-distance touchdown runs, Graham-Kapowsin saw its lead dwindle to 21-13 in the third period. But for the second game in a row, Aaron Wright's nose for the end zone helped put an end to any suspense over who would win. Wright scampered seven yards for a touchdown and followed that with a 27-yard scoring run to put the game out of reach. The week before, the senior running back scored the deciding touchdown in his team's non-leaague victory over Skyline. Against Puyallup, Merriweather romped 28 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter and 78 yards for another one in the second quarter. Dylan Scraggs' 23-yard return of a pass interception gave Graham-Kapowsin a three-touchdown advantage. Then Puyallup rallied for a touchdown on a 10-yard pass from Noah McFadden to Colby Burton, followed by field goals of 38 yards and 25 yards by Zach Munizza. After that, the Vikings found themselves on the wrong side of Wright.
Elma (5-2) at Eatonville (3-4), Oct. 23, 7 p.m.
The Eatonville Cruisers hope their school's homecoming game will end with them winning for the second straight week. They ended their own losing streak and put a dent in Tenino's hopes for a 1A Evergreen League title last week with a 42-41 victory. The Beavers' second conference loss of the season knocked them out of a share of Evergreen lead and kept Eatonville in the running for a possible spot in the playoffs. Elma is on a two-game winning streak after beating Aberdeen 39-19 last Friday. Earlier this season, the Eagles lost 39-20 to Tenino. Tenino, with leads of 14-0 and 21-7 in the first half, were headed for another win before Eatonville started turning the tide on the running and passing of quarterback Jake McCormick. McCormick threw touchdown passes to Zeke Scruggs and Tucker Poll, then scored three touchdowns himself on short runs. He followed the last one by passing for a two-point conversion for the victory. Eatonville's other TD was on Justin Brandt 19-yard fumble runback.
