Last year's game between Lake Stevens and Monroe, although not especially significant at the time, resulted in the difference in the final standings that allowed Monroe to take the league championship. Understanding the significance of last year's game, both teams took the field Friday night knowing a win could mean another league title.
The Bearcats started fast and then fizzled. Monroe recovered a Lake Stevens fumble on the opening kick-off. One play later Bearcat quarterback Andrew Zimmerman hit Gabe Moore up the middle for a 38-yard touchdown pass, but the point after attempt failed.
The Vikings fumbled three times in the first quarter and Monroe recovered all three miscues.-áUnable to capitalize, Monroe couldn't harness the Lake Stevens offense and the Vikings extracted their revenge, scoring 49 unanswered points.
Lake Stevens running back Austin Otis scored four times and rushed for a school record 292 yards.-áIn the fourth quarter Monroe running back Gabe Moore scored on a 92-yard kick-off return.-áTanner Ohlsen added the point after.
With a record of 1-3, and having suffered the first league loss, the Bearcats have been inconsistent so far.
"We will have to work on our tackling technique this week," said Coach Abrams after the game. "Getting another win will help with the team confidence, but if Monroe is going to be victorious again, the Bearcats will have to improve defensively.GÇ¥
