MHS DECA students heading to International Conference


The Monroe High School (MHS) chapter of DECA, a business-oriented student club, has four students qualified to attend the DECA International Career Development Conference next month in Orlando, Florida.
Macey McGovern, president of the MHS chapter, placed fourth in the Marketing Management event. "Last year, I was one place away,GÇ¥ said the daughter of Tom and Tenley McGovern. "It's really cool to make it this year.GÇ¥
The other three students -á' Cathryn Armstrong, Jessica Cichanski and Megan Rich ' won a Gold-level re-certification for their school-based enterprise, the Market, which sells pizza, beverages, Bearcat clothing and merchandise to students.
To have their business become DECA-certified, the students documented their proficiency in key business and performance areas, from marketing to merchandising, in a 30-page paper they will present at the international event. There, they will compete against 16,000 other students for the final trophy and placemarkers.
"It involves the HR, finances, and operations aspect,GÇ¥ said Jessica Chicanski, daughter of Chris and Kim Chicanski. Chicanski said DECA has led her to want to major in business. "It gives you a real-world opportunity to sit down with business professionals and present yourself in a businesslike manner,GÇ¥ she said. "It prepares you how to act around adults, which prepares you for the real world, which is amazing.GÇ¥
Cathryn Armstrong, daughter of Marc and Mary Armstrong, explained that the team worked on the re-certification paper for months. "We started it in November and slowly chipped away at it,GÇ¥ she said. All the students enrolled in the advanced Marketing course are eligible to work in the Market. Armstrong noted that all the student employees are getting good work experience. "We're held to the same standards as actual employees,GÇ¥ she explained.
"I love DECA,GÇ¥ Armstrong added. "You have to think on your feet and come up with real-world solutions to business problems.GÇ¥
