Turk of the Month: Siera Strauss

Seira Strauss of Sultan loves animals. And even though she still hasn't officially finished high school, she's had a long career of helping them out.
She volunteered at Sultan's animal shelter and rescue organization Pasado's Safe Haven, and now works at a veterinary hospital in Kirkland, driving her own car back and forth to work.
This fall, she'll start at Washington State University, working toward becoming a veterinarian.
She'll start as a junior because she is finishing her first two years of college while still in high school as part of the Running Start program.
"My parents don't own a whole lot of money, and I've have already gotten some college experience,GÇ¥ she said. "It's been really nice.GÇ¥
She hopes to win a spot in the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine. It's going to be tough; less than 10 percent of these who apply get accepted.
"There are about 1,000 people who apply each and 100 get in,GÇ¥ she said. "You have to have really good experience.GÇ¥
Strauss is already getting good grades, averaging about a 3.5 GPA.
And she's a long-time athlete, as well, with four years of club soccer playing for Snohomish United, as well as serving as team captain on her soccer team her senior year.
In addition to all that, as a Rotary Club student of the month, she will help organize and hold a food drive for the Sky Valley Food Bank this year.
