Floats catch judges' eye

Two of the top awards for floats in the 2014 Daffodil Festival's Grand Floral Parade were won by the Eatonville community and Bethel School District entries. For the second time in the last three years, Eatonville's float received the Queen's Award for the best depiction of the festival's theme, which this year was "Ready, set, grow." Festival officials presented the Daffodillian Award to the Bethel float for best use of daffodils. The parade was staged April 5 in Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting. The procession involved more than 150 entries, including floats, marching bands and mounted units. And entering one of those floats was no easy task, said Justine Thornton, who helped spearhead the Eatonville project.
