G-K teams honored for good grades

Graham-Kapowsin High School student-athletes were successful in the classrooms last fall. Six of the school's fall-season teams recently were given WIAA State Distinguished Team Awards for maintaining high academic grade, the school announced. Teams and groups with an average grade point average (gpa) of 3.0 to 3.49 qualify for the Distinguished Team Award. Those averaging 3.5 to 4.0 receive an Outstanding Team Award. Graham-Kapowsin earned Distinguished honors in boys cross country (3.2 gpa), girls cross country (3.2), girls golf (3.0), girls soccer (3.4), girls swimming (3.1) and volleyball (3.3). Teams statewide with the highest average grade point average are recognized as an academic state champion. Washington Dairy Farmers and Les Schwab Tires, in partnership with the WIAA (Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, the regulatory body for athletics and extracurriculars), have developed the scholastic awards program to recognize and reward teams and groups that maintain a high collective academic record. The awards are open to high schools' varsity, junior varsity and C-level sports teams, activity squads and music groups.
