UPDATED: 80-year-old Sultan resident shoots, kills burglar; husband hospitalized for stab wounds


The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office is reporting an 80-year-old Sultan woman shot and killed a home invader after the suspect stabbed her husband.
Deputies responded to the 13700 block of Woods Lake Road after receiving a call from the homeowner, reporting she had shot an intruder who stabbed her 75-year-old husband; he was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with abdominal stab wounds. He was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit Friday afternoon.-áThe Sultan couple's adult son was sleeping in another part of the residence and was unharmed, according to a sheriff's news release.
The man told deputies he was watching TV when he saw the unknown man ' identified-áFriday by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner -áas Steven N. Sheppard, 25, of Gold Bar ' on his back porch. Sheppard allegedly broke down the door and then went inside an d hit the 75-year-old man on the head and began stabbing him. That's when the man's 80-year-old wife grabbed a gun and shot Sheppard, the examiner's office reporting-áhis cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and manner as homicide. Deputies found Sheppard in the front room doorway, according to a sheriff's news release.
Following completion of its investigation, the sheriff's office states it will forward its report to the Snohomish County Prosecutor's Office to determine if there should be any charges.
